But I agree I would rather look like Sharma than Ondra, tho as a former weight lifter turned climber I'm already way more jacked than most climbers need to be.
I will say the extra muscle helps, but I’m not bulletproof, popped my hamstring on a heel hook despite very strong legs for example. Technique is still gonna win any day, that’s why I think the best combination is to just climb and eat, which I think is the true thrust of your blog. The only real difference between Ethan Pringle and Chris Sharma is that Chris EATS. Both have confessed to not following any kind of training routine other than just hardcore climbing so the real difference is calorie restriction and genetic body type. I think most climbers should eat more if they are underweight, they can even micro bulk if they struggle to gain weight, slowly getting into a healthy low to Healthy middle end BMI and gaining some nice muscle along the way. How they do that is up to them, training or hardcore climbing, it doesn’t matter really.

Re: My Daily Diet

"the body will store more than the usual amount of that food in body fat, when you do eat again."

Yeaaaah that's not how the human body works.

Re: A Hot and Humid Holiday

Too funny! That's an awesome picture you captured of 'Tim, the local' aka my big brother. It's funny, once in a while someone comments to me that they listened to one of my old podcasts. I haven't done them in a long time and, instead, I do video trip reports (vlogs) that are posted on here and on youtube. You should check them out! Lots of vlogs on the NRG.

Flaming Pellets is definately one of the classics at The Other Place! I haven't been down there in quite a while but need to get back to try Depth Charge and Low Brow. It was closed for a couple years and I kind of forget about it now that it's reopened. Thanks again for listening!

Re: New Projects

I just started listening to your podcast. I really enjoyed this trip report, it reminded me of my last trip to the New! We did many of the same climbs you described at The Other Place. We all absolutely loved Flaming Pelets, it's my hardest onsight to date. Proud assent for me! You also described your partner being scared of moving away from the bolt line, that is me in a nutshell! Something I continue to struggle with. Thank you for bringing back some great memories, can't wait to go back! Another route suggestion at The Other Place is Depth Charge. It reminded us of The Obed in TN.

Re: Two Ogres Chalkzilla Review

Thanks Matt!

Re: Two Ogres Chalkzilla Review

Nice review!

I was trying to send you an email from your contact form but it doesn't seem to be working... But yes everything you say is quite true. However, this post is from 2010 and I think climbers have come around to the idea that lifting heavy won't bulk you up. As you mentioned, Bechtel is a big proponent of heavy compound lifts as is many other trainers. The "deadlift" is pretty much the buzz word of climbing in 2016! Thanks for the comment!

Re: Outdoor Research Whirlwind Hoody Review

Ooo sorry for the late reply Joshua... the notification went to my spam folder. I have the large and I'm 6'1" 175lbs. Sounds like the medium would fit you better. I run these 0.5 size bigger than I run Sportiva shoes. I have a 11.5 street shoe and wear 43 sportivas and 43.5 in these scarpas. The arch wasn't tight, as I mentioned in the video with the "shoe fart", but the length and width was right on. Hope this helps, but I'm sure by now you already got a pair of shoes. sorry.....

Re: Scarpa Vapor V Review

Hi Gif, Thank you for the review of these shoes. I am poised to purchase a pair, and am trying to decide between 2 different sizes, 42 and 42.5. How much did these stretch for you? Super sorry for a late reply here. I am the same way, more or less. It's hard for me to gain weight, especially muscle. Basically, the only thing I have tweaked is I eat carbs (rice mostly) during long climbing days or sometimes I'll eat some carbs surrounding a workout. I work out in the afternoon, so I still try to stay away from a lot of carbs before 2pm or so. Hope this helps. If you want to gain weight, lift weights and eat lots of protein and healthy carbs.

Re: Experiments With Paleo Diet

Hey thanks for the informative post! I know it's been four years — how have you found the diet since, and have you changed anything? Personally I face the opposite problem of most people: I find it hard to gain weight even if I eat a lot (of junk). High metabolism/ectomorph they say. But I'm looking to structure a diet that will give me the best output for climbs.

Re: First Time at Stone Fort

Thanks Ethan!
